Thiersee Passion Plays...
Religious popular plays – also called Passion Plays – have been in existence since the Middle Ages and are as relevant today as then. Two of the best known Passion Play venues in the Alpine region lie in the holiday region Kufstein, just a few kilometres apart.
Over 200 years of Thiersee Passion Plays. In 1799, the Thiersee folk
praised the suffering and death of the Saviour in the form of a Mystery
Play during Lent in order to spare their valley the deprivation of war.
The love of Passion Plays was passed from generation to generation
of Thierseers.
250 Thierseers aged between 4 and 80 dedicate themselves voluntarily to the old
tradition for almost a year as actors, musicians or singers! After an 18 year break
because of the war, Thiersee reopened its doors in 1955 for the first post war Play,
celebrating a wonderful anniversary in 2005 as the most important Passion Play
venue in Austria together with Erl. Careful changes to the text, new costumes and
stage set design as well as a new composition for the Passion music were introduced
for its 50th birthday.
